Sync your car with your Home Computer using Microsoft Mesh

November 11, 2009 00:46 by Geoffrey Emery

Have you seen the mesh car yet? If you haven’t you should definitely check  it out. It’s really amazing that you sync you videos, images, and most importantly music to you car through your home computer. Ori, has conveniently put this into a really cool custom modeled console. The whole idea is a really cool and has great execution to it. I really like the gps syncing to a bing maps site, but i am a mapping geek so that isn’t say much.

James Senior and Angus Logan Talk about New With the Windows Live Platform

March 31, 2009 10:38 by gemery

While at Mix09 Geoffrey Emery talked to Angus Logan and James Senior about New Improvements to Live Messenger, In the second part of the interview we dive into what is new in the live framework. Its amazing at how much stuff these guys have going on. Sometimes it makes my head spin. In this interview we also get into what the difference between live sync and Live mesh.

What’s New in this Release

This update includes:

  • Support for side-by-side installation of the www.mesh.com local client and the developer.mesh-ctp.com local client. This means that you can use the production Mesh.com to sync data across all your devices, and develop applications for the Mesh Developer Sandbox that uses the local client—all on the same machine. For instructions on setting up side-by-side, please see this forum post.
  • Support for Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8
  • Single installer for the Live Framework SDK and the Live Framework Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio.
  • Resource Scripts are now supported in Silverlight applications and with the local Live Operating Environment
  • Public availability of the SDK and Tools on the Microsoft.com Download Center.
  • Improved stability in the client and the cloud Live Operating Environment.
  • Design and performance improvements to the API toolkits
  • Simplified workflow for setting up an account and a Live Framework project on the Azure Developer Portal.

The Live Framework SDK and Tools April CTP has just been launched!  Not really sure why they launched mid-March and called it an April CTP – but hey, I’m not complaining when you get:

  • All-in-one installer (like a multivitamin – lots of goodness in one capsule)
  • Support for Win7 and IE8 (satisfies even the most demanding dogfooder)
  • Side-by-side installation of Live Framework CTP and Live Mesh Beta (now be a consumer and dev – all at the same time!)
  • Performance Improvements (we’re super slick, just like Win7)
  • and more

For the full announcement

Live Framework Explorer (LFE) is an addin for Visual Studio 2008 that makes it much easier to browse the contents and data inside a user's Live Framework Resource Model.

Building Cool Stuff for windows mobile and cool windows mobile devices

January 7, 2009 10:25 by gemery

In one of out last interviews at the PDC Underground Techzulu’s Geoffrey Emery get in touch with two of the members of the windows mobile team Loke Uei and Lillian Eng. In this interview we talk how developers can Build Cool Stuff for windows mobile using the Windows Mobile Developer kit. Its amazing that you can use just this one developers kit to develop apps for so many great phones on the market like the black jack 2  and the htc touch pro, and the Palm treo just to name a few.  One of the newest things that has come out for the windows mobile device the mesh environment where uses can sync files and folders from the phone to their computer using there data plan on the phone or the wifi network. Microsoft open its Live Mesh mobile portal to the public, available at http://m.mesh.com, the website provides access to the basic functionality of Live Mesh through the browser, albeit without the ability to automatically synchronize folders that comes with a native client application.

Here’s our quick walkthrough:

  • image First you’ll need to sign in with the LiveID you use for Mesh. While it can be a bit cumbersome to enter the first time around, the username + password tend to get automatically saved between sessions.
  • Once you’ve logged in, the homepage shows the aggregated news feed for all your folders, including new people joining your Mesh and new files/folders that have been created. Across the top of the page there are two tabs, News and Folders
  • The folders page does exactly what it says, listing out all the directories from your existing Mesh along with the individual news feed and the members of that folder. Functionality such as adding a folder and file is built-in, along with the ability to get at files already in your Mesh – great for getting that important piece of work you didn’t want to email to yourself.

All this and more in a great interview..

Check out live mesh in action.

Hands on with Live Mesh

Check it out here www.mesh.com

What is Live Mesh?

Live Mesh is a “software-plus-services” platform and experience that enables PCs and other devices to “come alive” by making them aware of each other through the Internet, enabling individuals and organizations to manage, access, and share their files and applications seamlessly on the Web and across their world of devices. Live Mesh includes:

§ A platform that defines and models a user’s digital relationships between devices, data, applications, and people—made available to developers through an open data model and protocols.

§ A cloud service providing an implementation of the platform hosted in Microsoft data centers.

§ Software, a client implementation of the platform that enables local applications to run offline and interact seamlessly with the cloud.

§ A platform experience that exposes the key benefits of the platform for bringing together a user’s devices, files and applications, and social graph, with news feeds across all of these.
